Relaxed Tailoring Trends Men Should Wear Now

A suit should never look as though it is asking permission to be worn. The most compelling relaxed tailoring trends men are embracing replace stiffness with quiet control: softer shoulders, fuller trousers and cloth that moves with the body, while retaining the precision expected in the boardroom, at dinner and on arrival.

For the modern executive, this is not a retreat from formality. It is a more assured expression of it. The objective is not to look casual, but to look entirely at ease in a garment built around the body it belongs to.

Relaxed tailoring trends men should understand

Relaxed tailoring is often mistaken for oversized tailoring. The distinction matters. An oversized jacket simply adds volume; a relaxed bespoke jacket redistributes it with intent. There may be more room through the chest, a softer line at the shoulder and a slightly longer or more open skirt, but the collar must still sit cleanly against the neck and the balance of the coat must remain exact.

The trend is a response to a change in how influential men dress. Uniformly slim, tightly structured suits can appear dated when every other element of modern luxury has become more personal and less performative. A softer silhouette offers presence without strain. It suggests a man who understands proportion well enough not to rely on compression for authority.

This direction is particularly relevant in Dubai, where comfort must coexist with a polished public image. The right construction and a considered cloth can make a tailored wardrobe feel considerably lighter without diminishing its visual command.

The softer shoulder, correctly executed

The shoulder sets the character of a jacket before a word is spoken. Traditional British-inspired tailoring can use padding and a defined roped sleeve head to create a strong, military line. It remains an excellent choice for certain physiques, formal occasions and clients who prefer a sharper expression.

Relaxed tailoring generally reduces that architecture. A soft shoulder follows the natural line of the wearer, with little or no padding, while a lighter canvas allows the jacket to settle rather than stand away from the torso. The result is elegant, but only when cut with discipline. Remove too much structure and the jacket can collapse at the chest or pull at the upper back.

For men with broad shoulders or an athletic build, a softer shoulder can be especially flattering, avoiding the exaggerated width that off-the-rack jackets often impose. For a narrower frame, the answer may be a lightly shaped shoulder rather than complete softness. Bespoke tailoring is valuable here because the degree of structure should be decided by the client’s proportions, not by a seasonal label.

A clean chest remains essential

Ease is not looseness everywhere. The chest should be shaped enough to hold the jacket’s line, and the lapel should lie flat whether worn open or buttoned. A high-quality canvas gives the front of the coat life, moulding gradually to the wearer rather than becoming rigid or lifeless.

This is why relaxed tailoring is not merely a matter of ordering a larger size. It is a technical exercise in controlled ease.

Trousers are becoming more generous

The narrow trouser has held menswear for long enough. Today’s more refined proportion allows room through the thigh, a measured taper towards the hem and, often, a higher rise. This shape is more comfortable when seated, more flattering across a range of builds and far more convincing with a softly constructed jacket.

Pleats have returned for the same reason. A single forward or reverse pleat provides movement where it is needed, particularly for clients who travel, attend long meetings or move between formal and social settings in one day. It should not create excess cloth at the waist. The waistband must sit securely, and the trouser should fall cleanly from the hip.

A wider hem can give the silhouette gravitas, especially with loafers, suede derbies or a discreetly substantial leather shoe. Yet width must relate to height and build. A tall client may carry a more generous trouser with ease; a shorter client may benefit from a restrained taper and a precise break. There is no universal relaxed fit, only the right fit for the man wearing it.

Cloth now does more of the work

Relaxed form is most successful in fabrics with movement. High-twist wool, open-weave wool, wool-silk blends and finely finished linen blends bring air and texture to the silhouette. They allow the garment to feel natural rather than formal in the old sense of the word.

Pure linen has undeniable appeal in warm weather, but it creases readily and may not suit a client who requires an immaculate appearance from morning until evening. A wool-linen-silk blend often offers a better compromise: the dry character of linen, the recovery of wool and a subtle richness from silk. For business wear, a high-twist wool in navy, charcoal or tobacco can deliver breathability without visual informality.

Colour also shapes the mood. Mid-blue, stone, soft grey, olive and warm brown work naturally with softer construction because they reveal texture and depth. Deep navy remains indispensable, particularly for clients who need a suit to move from a private meeting to an evening engagement. Black is usually less forgiving in relaxed tailoring, where it can make an unstructured jacket appear too close to eveningwear or too stark for daylight.

The jacket should work beyond the suit

One sign of a well-judged relaxed jacket is its ability to stand alone. Worn with pleated trousers in a contrasting cloth, fine-gauge knitwear or a crisp open-collar shirt, it retains the authority of tailoring without looking artificially formal. This versatility has made the separate jacket central to a considered wardrobe.

However, versatility should not become vagueness. A jacket cut for denim is not necessarily the same jacket required for a significant presentation. The former may be shorter, less shaped and made in a more textured cloth; the latter needs enough structure to hold its form under pressure. During a private consultation, the client’s actual calendar should guide these decisions. The most elegant garment is the one that performs naturally in the rooms where it will be seen.

Details should be quieter, not absent

Relaxed tailoring benefits from restraint. Patch pockets can soften a jacket’s character, while flap pockets preserve a more formal edge. A three-roll-two fastening, a lower button stance and a slightly wider lapel can create a confident, elongated line. None of these choices should be treated as a costume of Italian style. Their success depends on balance.

The same applies to shirts and accessories. A spread collar in a fine cotton, a knitted silk tie or an unstructured suede loafer can support the mood without reducing the outfit to weekend wear. For more formal engagements, a crisp white shirt and silk tie keep the relaxed suit firmly within the language of business.

Avoid forcing every trend into one garment. Wide lapels, broad trousers, patch pockets, bold checks and soft loafers can work together, but only for a client whose stature and lifestyle support them. Often, one or two relaxed elements are enough to modernise a wardrobe with greater longevity.

Why bespoke makes the difference

Soft tailoring exposes poor fit quickly. Without heavy padding or a rigid fused front to disguise imbalance, the garment must be cut accurately at the shoulder, neck, chest and seat. The pattern needs to account for posture, habitual movement and the way the wearer prefers to stand.

At DONFIORITO, the process begins with those considerations rather than a ready-made silhouette. Fabric, construction and proportion are chosen as parts of one composition, then refined through fittings until the garment carries its ease with precision. That is the art of bespoke: freedom in the cloth, discipline in the cut.

The strongest relaxed suit does not announce that it follows a trend. It allows the wearer to enter a room looking composed, comfortable and entirely himself. Choose the amount of softness that serves your frame and your life, and let every remaining detail earn its place.
